Côte d’Ivoire: Registration of candidates begins ahead of October voteAug 4, 2015
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of Côte d’Ivoire has begun to register candidates for the presidential election of October. Registration will remain open through 25 August.
The vote is seen as a major step towards consolidating peace and democracy in Côte d'Ivoire.
UNDP has been playing an important role to support the elections and said it welcomes the start of this new phase in the preparation of the ballot. "The first candidate submitted their application to the IEC, paving the way for what is expected to be a rich and diverse pool of candidates. This is a new and important step in the electoral process in Côte d'Ivoire, "said Babacar Cissé, UNDP Resident Representative in Côte d'Ivoire.
IEC has also made the electoral register public, including some 6.3 million voters. People will also be able to access the list in polling stations countrywide until August 9.
UNDP is providing technical support to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the organization of the elections and procuring essential voting material. UNDP is also training polling officials and police forces to secure the elections, as well as helping to involve youth and women in the political process.
