UNDP Uganda recognized at the 2016 Awards for Excellence in Human Development ReportingDec 6, 2016
Uganda’s 2015 National Human Development Report has been announced as one of the four winners of the 2016 Awards for Excellence in Human Development Reporting.
This was announced by the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) during the 2016 Awards for Excellence in Human Development Reporting for national and regional reports award ceremony held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Monday 5 December 2016.
The award was presented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador, HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and UNDP Administrator, Helen Clark joined by HDRO Director, Selim Jahan.
Uganda’s report, titled “Unlocking the development potential of Northern Uganda” is the only report from Africa to win this year. It was considered among the top four after an evaluation panel reviewed 29 submissions from among 50 national and regional human development reports published since 2012.
Other winners include; Chile 2012 HDR ‘Subjective Wellbeing: The Challenges of Rethinking Development’, Montenegro 2013 HDR ‘People are the real wealth of the country’. How rich is Montenegro’ and Sri Lanka 2014 HDR ‘Youth and Development: Towards a More Inclusive Future.’
These reports represent outstanding examples of how human development report teams can engage with communities, organisations and institutions to develop the reports, and communicate findings in ways to influence political debate in countries.
Selim Jahan, Director of the Human Development Report Office speaking at the event said; “National Human Development Reports have always informed Global Human Development Reports and their analysis and recommendations can now play an important role in the dialogue around the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These reports are the result of committed efforts to engage with a broad range of stakeholders and help understand disparities within a society.”
“We are very honoured to have our NHDR recognised globally – this award is not just for us as country office but for the people of Northern Uganda who after a two-decade insurgency rose from the ashes and onto the road of development,” said Ms. Almaz Gebru, the UNDP Uganda Country Director, after receiving the award.
She said that since its launch, in December 2015, the report has changed the narrative on Northern Uganda from insurgency to a focus on its developmental potential. “Its novelty is that it changes the perception from a dark picture to one of progress and continues to make huge impact in shaping policy, strategy and programming for Northern Uganda,” she added.Contact information
