28-30 March 2017: Second International Conference on the Emergence of Africa (CIEA 2017)

Two years after the first edition, Africa is meeting in Abidjan from 28 to 30 March 2017 for the second edition of the International Conference on the Emergence of Africa (ICEA). ICEA 2017 will be an opportunity to take stock of the emergence plans undertaken on the continent, assess their first effects, and further the debate on their implementation, in light of the Sustainable Development Goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and experiences gained in Africa and elsewhere.

Designed as a platform of exchange to stimulate debate and exchange of practices, the ICEA is organized by the Ivorian Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the World Bank and the African Development Bank Group.

The central theme of this second edition, Implementation of plans for emergence in Africa, and its two key sub-themes — Governance of public institutions and Structural, inclusive and sustainable transformation — will be discussed in a high-level panel, workshops and side-events, in the presence of several Heads of State and Government and well over 400 representatives from civil society and research institutions from 54 African countries and countries around the world.

ICEA 2017 will present reference documents produced by UNDP, the World Bank and the African Development Bank on the lessons learnt from processes of emergence. To this end, case studies conducted by UNDP on the experiences of 13 African countries will be the subject of a special debate. The participation of several Asian (Singapore, China, Japan) and Latin American (Mexico, Colombia) countries should also be noted.

The national, African and international media are invited to take part in the event. Press briefings and interviews will be organized on 28, 29 and 30 March, at the end of the sessions.
