UNDP to advocate for stronger partnerships for Africa’s development at TICAD 7

26 July 2019, New York – The Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Achim Steiner will attend the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) in Yokohama City in Japan from 28th–30th August 2019. During the conference, UNDP, a founding co-organizer of TICAD with Japan, will host a number of side events to engage the Government of Japan, African governments, the private sector, civil society organizations and a range of other development partners, to advocate for stronger partnerships and more investments to facilitate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa.
In line with the TICAD7 theme, “Advancing Africa’s Development through People, Technology and Innovation”, the UNDP’s side events at the conference will include the following:

Partnering for Progress: Promoting Innovation and Access for Neglected Diseases in furtherance of Universal Health Coverage (UHC)
Mr. Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, a representative of the Government of Japan, and Ms. Catherine Ohura, CEO/Executive Director of the Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Fund, will be speaking at this event with representatives from the African Union and other speakers. The discussions will focus on how the ongoing collaboration between the Government of Japan, the UNDP-led Access and Delivery Partnership (ADP) and the GHIT Fund on improving innovation and access to health technologies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of unmet health needs, is contributing to the attainment of UHC by several low-and middle-income countries.

Leveraging Blue Economy for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth in Africa
H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya will deliver the key note address at this event. Representatives from the African Union, Japan and Portugal will join UNDP and participants to discuss how to unlock the full potential of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and marine resources for SDGs achievement in Africa.

Africa/Japan Start-ups Pitch: Innovation & New Partnerships for SDGs
In collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), UNDP will organize a pitching event where 17 tech start-ups selected from African countries and 7 Japanese start-ups will showcase their innovative business cases with proven potential of business scalability and impact in contributing to the SDGs. Business pitching will receive advice and comments from experts and capitalists with expertise on the African market in the areas of investment and/or social entrepreneurship. The session will enable participants to feel the lively vibrations of innovative businesses in Africa that have the potential for high growth. The aim is to facilitate potential partnership with Japanese investors and corporations. Mr. Achim Steiner will deliver the opening remarks at this important event.

Launch of Tripartite Partnership (UNDP-JICA-JETRO)
A key highlight of TICAD 7 will be a media launch of a tripartite partnership between UNDP, JETRO and JICA with the aim of promoting sustainable growth and development in Africa through enhanced partnership with the private sector. Mr. Steiner, Dr. Shinichi Kitaoka, President of JICA and Mr. Nobuhiko Sasaki, Chairman & CEO of JETRO will be speaking at the launch.
