On the sidelines of the virtual Ministerial Meeting - a key step ahead of the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8) in August - a Multi-Sectoral Dialogue will be held on 5 April. The dialogue is expected to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including private sector representatives and civil society organizations from across Africa and Japan. Among the key objectives of the side-event is to share the outcomes of the Ministerial Meeting, as well as to deepen discussions among a broader group of stakeholders on how TICAD partners can encourage accelerated trade, investment and cooperation in Africa, especially through enhanced public and private partnership.

Overall, the dialogue is expected to be aligned with the three key themes of the Ministerial Meeting:

  • achieving sustainable and inclusive growth and reducing economic inequalities;
  • realizing sustainable and resilient society based on human security;
  • building sustainable peace and stability through supporting Africa’s own efforts

For nearly 30 years, TICAD has been a multilateral platform to explore innovative, sustainable, and equitable development pathways across Africa, based on the principles of African ownership and international partnership.

Together with the Government of Japan, the African Union Commission, the United Nations Office of the Special Advisor for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme, and the World Bank, TICAD has engaged African leaders, regional institutions, development partners, academia, civil society organizations, and the private sector to identify development challenges and prioritize interventions to ensure impactful solutions to the continent’s development challenges.

Across Africa, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated economies, reversed development gains, worsened inequalities, and heightened societal vulnerabilities. Now more than ever, the value of TICAD as a platform to set a pathway for inclusive, sustainable, and resilient growth is important as African countries try to ‘Build Back Better’ from the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic.
