Sustainable Development

UNDP works with countries across sub-Saharan Africa to ensure economic growth produces shared benefits.

We collaborate with governments, civil society and the private sector to help them transform their economies, while creating jobs and making sure resources are invested back into communities.

We support countries as they diversify their economies, work to integrate global value chains and build skills and human capital to maximize development outcomes. For instance, recognizing the far-reaching impacts of mining and logging – which represent important sources of revenue for many countries, UNDP developed a strategy for supporting sustainable and equitable management of the extractive industries. We help countries to manage revenues transparently and invest them in economic diversification, as well as in human, social, physical and financial capital.

Sustainable development is about meeting the needs of people today without compromising the ability of future generations to fulfill theirs. UNDP supports countries to build the strategies, institutions and mechanisms necessary to achieve development paths that are environmentally sustainable, while promoting economic growth, boosting human development and reducing poverty and inequalities.

UNDP helps countries and regional institutions to develop low-carbon development plans and promote and access funds for climate change mitigation and adaptation. We also assist public institutions to integrate disaster risk reduction and climate-related risks and opportunities into national planning and poverty reduction strategies, while addressing the needs of more vulnerable groups like women and indigenous people.

As part of our environmental portfolio, we help countries and communities to integrate the sound management of ecosystems and diversity into development, creating livelihoods and preserving other vital services for people, such as the provision of drinking water, food, energy and habitats. UNDP also supports the achievement of universal access to modern energy for the poor and its enhanced quality, security and affordability. We promote decentralized energy in remote areas, boost people’s access to renewables through microfinance, and assist countries as they prepare national action plans for Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All).
